She is originally from Qingdao and there she was born and raised. She is an alumna of the Washington University School of Law, St. Louis where she graduated with a degree in Juris Doctor. Yi obtained her J.D. in the year 2004. She further holds a Bachelor of Law from the prestigious Ocean University of Qingdao where she graduated in 2000. She was capable of handling a variety of criminal cases, as an assistant public defender in the trial office of Kansas City.
