The Buhler Gallery is located at the St. Boniface Hospital, and it is a maison des arts in Manitoba. The Buhler Gallery has been available to patients, employees, doctors, volunteers, and visitors since September 2007. The Gallery’s mandate is to be a place of vision and contemplation, engaging everyone in music, visual arts, readings and performances. St. Boniface Hospital recognizes the role of arts in health, healing, and community. The hospital created the Gallery to emphasize the importance of arts to health. It hopes patients and visitors find the exhibitions interesting and soothing. The gallery employs a part-time Director/Curator but depends heavily on volunteers who welcome visitors. The Art Advisory Council, a board of volunteers from the medical and artistic communities, also governs the Gallery. The Council meets three times a year to evaluate the Gallery’s operation, approve artwork donations to its permanent collection, and provide professional advice to the Curator. St. Boniface Hospital is the Gallery’s parent organization. It receives funding in the form small endowments from the Winnipeg Foundation, St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, and St. Boniface Hospital. Donations from other sources augment the funds.
