H. J. High Construction Johnny High (1937-2016) Johnny High was born in Lafayette, Indiana. Everyone loved him, and he was known as Johnny. He worked as a brick mason at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. During his visits to Orlando, he saw that the area had untapped potential for growth and prosperity. In 1935, H.J. High relocated to Orlando. The company opened in 1936 following his decision to establish a masonry and concrete sales firm after working for several companies as a brick mason. High Construction was involved in big development ventures across Central Florida since its owner had maintained an outstanding reputation. In 1955, he founded High Construction Company located at 1015 West Amelia St. in Orlando. In the early days, the company did many competitively-bidded work. The company bid on many schools for the Orange County School Board and church facilities for Catholic Diocese St. Augustine. High was a part of other business buildings. Cape Kennedy began construction in 1961 for the Apollo moon landing mission. High was operational at the Cape for 7 years. H. J. High Construction Company was part of the Cape's frantic construction program and was honored by the Corps of Engineers for the quality of the facility. In 1968 Johnny High had a heart attack. Steven W. High (24 years old) took over. The company continued to grow and diversify during this era of transition. Over time, H.J. High evolved from a hard dollar-bidding contractor to a construction-industry leader undertaking multi-million-dollar projects through various delivery methods. High was awarded the contract to construct the $60 million Florida Hospital main campus in Orlando. The project came to the attention of the Federal Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. Construction management was a deviation from the traditional general contracting. In the 1970s and 1980s, H.J. High responded to the needs of increasingly sophisticated clients by offering design/build services. This trend was particularly evident in the warehousing and food service sector in Central Florida. H. J. High provides a wide range of services, including construction management, design/build, and general contractor (High Construction Company, n.d.).

An Orlando-based construction company receives glowing reviews ranging from professional workers to ethical practices. A reviewer praises it as one of the best construction firms in Orlando, with another saying the company is five-star with father's founding principles carrying on by the son. A third review said the company is trustworthy and proud to work with, while another reviewer commented on their great office staff. However, the company can also disappoint, as one consumer said they only worked on minor projects, depending on the demand. Overall, the majority of clients approve of the company.
