Scenic Grande: Memory Care
We have been in this facility for over a year and I have witnessed no major changes made to accommodate the increasing number of residents, notably Health Care Aide staff being understaffed. It’s a struggle to get assistance daily. I have witnessed residents become agitated and start fights amongst themselves while no staff is around to monitor their behaviour.
The common area is the only location monitored often, leaving hallways unmonitored. Even then, the common area can also be found left unattended due to the low amount of staff. This facility will occasionally bring staff in from an agency they have a contract with, but it’s almost redundant as the agency staff don’t know about the residents and are often confused about what they should do or where things are.
Communication and time management between staff is very poor. The cleanliness of this unit is non-existent and is beyond disgusting and housekeeping cannot keep up with it. For example, chairs are often left soiled and not sanitized. Health care has many duties to attend to, such as cleaning the dishes, wiping tables, sweeping the floors, and feeding residents that are unable. There is so much for them to do which leaves residents neglected.
Though staff try to attend to everything as fast as they can, they are simply too short-staffed, which leaves many residents no choice but to wait, even if they soiled themselves. Residents need to be a higher priority than other duties.
Despite how nice they are towards residents, the majority of staff are not properly trained with dementia. They don’t know how to de-escalate situations, provide social care or read the special needs of residents. Until recently, staff education was never provided, but is still not the correct course in handling a person with dementia. The courses are revolving around what dementia is, but staff need to be trained and equipped to handle agitation and behavioural changes due to dementia.
Care needs are below Alberta Health Services (AHS) standards. However, as a private establishment, you cannot report that residents are heavily neglected. They continue to fabricate their policies to whatever suits management, in hopes to save themselves from legal action.
Sheila (Director) doesn’t treat families equally. She is not level-headed with concerns of families. The MC unit, locked unit, and doors are not monitored, and residents escape the premises daily, into the downstairs parkade because no one watches the doors.
They cannot even follow a basic care plan for residents to brush their teeth and even more so with showering. Staff will say the resident refuses before reapproaching. In addition, if the designated recreation person (Ashley) is not working, residents will stare at a TV (that may or may not even be on) and sit around not engaging in any activities. They are residents falling asleep in a chair sideways and no staff stops to care.
They sell a practiced speech of how wonderful they are and what they can provide, but a week after and you will regret being brought in with them. This place puts a lot of stress on families when their staff are unable to provide adequate care. Most residents hire an additional private caretaker to monitor their loved ones, on top of what you’re paying to the establishment as the staff are simply not able to provide the quality care you want or they need.
I would not recommend that your loved ones be placed in this “luxurious” place as their care does not meet that standard at all.
