The Province of Alberta has existed since September 1905, including the formation of the University of Calgary. Calgary was overgrowing and needed a school for post-secondary education. In Alberta, the Normal School was founded, which later became the Werklund School of Education. The Normal School created steady teachers and a growing province. The University of Alberta was founded in Strathcona, Alberta, in 1908. Now Edmonton, the founding disappointed Calgarians. Over the years, they lobbied fiercely for an independent institution. Students, alumni, staff, and faculty came together to support the struggle passionately. The University of Calgary was granted autonomy on April 29, 1966. Their hard work was finally recognized. Calgary was booming, and many new teachers arrived from around the world. In 2016-17, the University of Calgary celebrated its 50th year as an independent university. Graduate students play an important role in shaping the future University. We want to hear from all graduate students about how the University can improve your experience of studying, researching, and teaching and learning. The Graduate Student Experience Focus Group (hwww.ucalgary.ca/eyeshigh/engage) will include a free meal and parking if needed, and only graduate students will participate. There are only 30 spots, so please RSVP to
[email protected] with your name and student ID. Let us know if you need parking or if you have any dietary restrictions. Please tell your graduate friends and network. The focus group will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 19, 4:00 - 6:15 p.m., at the LD.
