Canadian courts do not use the multiplier method. This calculator adds your financial losses (treatment and care costs, and lost income) to a pain-and-suffering range for your level of injury, based on typical Canadian awards: about $5,000 to $40,000 for minor injuries, $50,000 to $150,000 for moderate ones, $150,000 to $350,000 for serious permanent injuries, and up to the national cap of about $470,000 for catastrophic ones. The total is then reduced by your share of fault under Alberta law.
For a car accident in Alberta, pain and suffering for a minor injury (sprains, strains and whiplash-type injuries) is capped at $6,306 in 2026. Injuries beyond that definition are not capped.
This applies to anyone hurt in a crash involving a vehicle, including pedestrians, cyclists and passengers. Slip and fall, dog bite, medical malpractice and other injuries follow the ordinary rules above.
