Ben Moss Jewellers was established in 1910 and served as one of Canada's oldest independent and family-owned fine jewelry companies. They were financially troubled due to external factors. In 2013, a wholesaler bought out the company, and the business went into receivership and closed all stores in May 2016. In January 2017, Ontario-based Charm Diamond Centres purchased Ben Moss Jewellers' trademark rights and intends to open 16 stores in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, and British Columbia. A privately-held company, Charm Diamond Centres (Crescent Gold and Diamonds), was founded by Richard Calder in 1972. The company, with 88 plus stores, is the largest independent and employee-owned jewelry retailer in Canada (Crescent Gold and Diamonds 2021). Over 800 Newfoundlanders are currently employed in these retail outlets, which operate under the Charm Diamond Centres and Crescent Gold and Diamonds names.
