Block 1912 Constructed in 1912, the Hulbert Block is an Edwardian period commercial structure with a brick façade. It is situated on Whyte Ave., Old Strathcona's most dynamic road. The structure was constructed using a permit issued by Russell A. Hulbert in 1912. The building is specifically named after the year of its construction. In 2016, the building became an historic site following city council approval. The building is historically important because of its association with Strathcona's growth in the 1890s, when the first railroad arrived. After the historical designation, Scott Ashe said, "These designations highlight the rich and varied history of our town, as well as the importance of preserving that history." Block 1912 is a café. For the past 30 years, it has been serving the Old Strathcona Community. The café was featured on the Food Network and has received many awards, including the Golden Fork. Other mentions and praises related to sandwiches, coffees, desserts, etc. also came our way. The café also supports the local music and art scene. Local artists and musicians are promoted in the café. Artists are encouraged to present their portfolios to the café manager. Also, live music is played in the café every Monday and Thursday.
