The Department of Energy has one of the most varied and well-heeled histories in the Federal Government. The Department is young, having been initiated in 1977. However, the Manhattan Project’s atomic bomb development as well as several disparate energy programs from other Federal agencies before its establishment in 1977 is where the Department came from. The Energy Department’s mission is to secure America’s prosperity and security by advancing science-based technology solutions to America’s energy, nuclear, and environmental challenges. Jennifer Granholm was confirmed as the United States Secretary of Energy on February 24, 2021. She heads an agency that maintains a successful, secure, and effective nuclear deterrent; reduces the danger of nuclear proliferation; oversees the U.S. energy supply and promotes a clean energy future; and cleans up environmental pollution from the U.S. nuclear weapons production and research during the Cold War.
