Alberta law is a complex and rapidly-changing field, and it is crucial for Alberta residents who are facing a separation to get good legal help. Ronald Billingsley, an Edmonton family lawyer, will help you through the stressful process of spousal separation. Rossdale is my office where I am an Edmonton family and divorce lawyer. It is a wonderful location because I live close by – just a five-minute drive – which means I can serve my clients better, such as searching for documents at the Courthouse or the Law Courts. My home office is a good place to work from, the space I have with two offices on the second floor and a conference/meeting area as well as seating on the main floor. It is a comfortable, cost-efficient office space where deals can be negotiated or trials can be won. I work for clients all over Alberta. I am available to negotiate settlements on good terms or litigate strongly against adversaries, as you need. You give me the direction and the story, I provide the guidance to achieve the outcome as you have shared it with me. I am happy to act as your objective, professional advocate. I will guide you through the strict legalities of family law separation or divorce. I understand the emotional need you may have to see your long-term children.

Do not retain this man. Here’s why: I was trying to find one of the better lawyers in the Edmonton Area to deal with my divorce and after much research, I landed on Ron. I thought most of the reviews seemed good and he seemed to specialize in the area I needed. At first, he seemed pretty good and was on top of things for the most part. Things slowly began to decline. He burned through retainers at an excessive rate and after I went through his invoices with my now lawyer, we discovered he would rebill me for certain things that he either already did or said he had done when really he did not. I had an important court date coming up and he had a deadline to have documents ready to attend court/sent off to the opposition. He called me and told me he was going to miss the court date as he was ill and in the hospital. I took his word for it but in the long run it screwed me over as maintenance enforcement suspended my license. A new court date was scheduled for November. Three weeks before the court date I reached out in multiple different ways (text, e-mail, and called) on multiple occasions and I never did receive a reply. The day the documents were to be sent off to the opposition (which I only realized because I was searching for a new lawyer at this point) he finally returned my attempts to communicate. At first it was a text with him saying “Who is this?,” and then he called after I replied with my name and he said “What can I do for you, sir?” This coming from the man, the LAWYER, who had deadlines to be met that day and he didn’t even remember who I was. I reminded him that today was the deadline to have our paperwork (Affidavit, etc.) submitted. I heard him check and he goes “Oh yeah, that was today.” Luckily enough, I recorded this phone call and had witnesses to it because it is unbelievable and truly jaw dropping. Continued... Ron appeared/sounded completely intoxicated. He told me he was in Ukraine at that very moment. I can’t say whether or not what he said was true, however, my witnesses and the people I showed the recording to all agreed that he was quite obviously severely intoxicated. He continued on chatting away and brushed off missing the deadline like it was nothing and said how we needed to do the four-way meeting before anything else. This stunned me because we discussed the four-way meeting that already took place and how I would not need to do it again. He then put me on hold and proceeded to call the opposition’s lawyer to try and arrange a meeting. Let me remind you that this man was quite obviously intoxicated while doing this. He went on to say how “All women are vindictive C&$ts.” Two of my witnesses to this call were women and are giving statements to this as I’m in the process of trying to recoup the many wasted dollars and time on this, which is recommended by my current lawyer. I am also filing a complaint with the Law Society of Alberta, which has also been recommended. More reasons not to retain Ron: What was really frustrating was his incredible skill of not responding to my questions; my emails, texts, and calls… but anytime he needed a retainer top up he would constantly send me reminders until it was fully topped up. I have records of absolutely everything, including this last phone call I had with him. After the call I immediately sent a letter terminating him as my legal representation, despite his comment, “Thanks for hanging on with me, sir.” He still owes me all of the money that was left in the retainer when I terminated him and have yet to hear anything about that. Just don’t retain him, you’ll regret it. Ignore the positive reviews. Everyone will have their pros but his cons outweigh those a million times over. Even when I was calling around looking for new lawyers when he was ghosting me, all of the law firms asked me who my current lawyer was and said they weren’t surprised I was looking to retain someone new. Look at his most recent reviews. Just. Don't. Do. It.
