Swimming and Coaching Success Story Fear of water was always part of my life. Just standing on the water's edge could make me shiver. One summer, in 2018, I was on a camping trip and was watching my friends swim around in the lake. They looked so relaxed with the water, I wanted to learn how to swim. I started with YouTube videos and the baby pool. I used Styrofoam noodles on my arms to stay afloat. I was determined to learn. Once I got out of the baby pool, I signed up for some group lessons. I tried a couple of coaches before I found Coach Stewart. He was gentler than the others. He was always calm and helped me feel at ease in the water. My technique improved. He is a master at teaching exactly what you need when you need it. There is no other coach like him. At this point, I had heard that Stewart also had open water classes (swimming open water is insane! It is a scary place with sharks, gun-toting monstrosities and other dangers). But when I saw he was offering beginner open water classes in March of 2020, I got excited and signed up. Ever since then, swimming has been my passion. I went from Level 3 to Master's in Coast Swim Team and swam in my first meet on November 20, 2022. I love the focus and technique of swimming in a pool, but open water swimming is more liberating and enjoyable. So when Coach announced the Marathon Swim Program in 2022, I jumped at the opportunity. It was the smartest decision I ever made. I had a blast doing crazy swims last summer. Now, my 2023 Marathon training group has just opened, and I am training for the Skaha Lake Ultra 12k swim, August 2023. I am nervous about the distance and the legendary Skaha Lake monsters, but I can't wait to take it on. Coach Stewart has made a simple 6-month plan for me to conquer the lake.
