How this Kelowna solar cost calculator works

This calculator sizes a solar system from your electricity use. Your monthly bill, divided by the average British Columbia electricity price, gives your yearly use; Kelowna's sunshine (1,125 kWh per kW of panels a year) then gives the system size that covers it, adjusted for roof direction and shade. The installed price is that size multiplied by the price per watt homeowners in British Columbia pay installers. Payback compares that price with what the panels save at British Columbia power prices, assuming prices rise 3% a year.

British Columbia numbers this calculator uses

Installed price
$2.52–$3.17 per watt in British Columbia (CAD) (typical $2.85), before rebates. A typical 6 kW home system costs $15,100–$19,000.
Sunshine
1,125 kWh of electricity per kW of panels a year in Kelowna.
Electricity price
About 12.6¢ per kWh, the average residential price in British Columbia.
Selling power back
BC Hydro closed net metering to new customers on July 1, 2026. New systems join the self-generation rate, which credits exported power at 10¢/kWh.
Rebates and tax credits
BC Hydro pays $1,000 per kW, up to $5,000, for systems on the new self-generation rate installed by a qualifying contractor. Solar equipment is PST-exempt. There is no federal solar grant or loan open to homeowners in 2026: the Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in 2024 and the Greener Homes Loan closed on October 1, 2025.

An estimate, not a quote. Roof size and pitch, shading, equipment, permits and the installer all change the final price; installers confirm it after a site visit.
