Britannia Pool Originated in cooperative community action in 1970, it was initiated by local residents and civil organizations in 1974. Primary to its formation was the desire to integrate and coordinate a range of human services that address the discerned needs and interests of its “clients.” Official opening took place on Saturday, 5 June 1976. The non-profit society has a local, democratically elected Board of Management that delivers leadership in developing and facilitating a wide range of educational, social, and recreational services to the Grandview-Woodland, Strathcona, and Strathcona communities. The Society is accountable for the 17.04-acre complex in collaboration with the Vancouver School Board and the Vancouver Public Library Board. Starting January 1, 2023, the Canadian Red Cross won't offer swimming lessons, and instead, will channel its humanitarian work toward providing aid. The Lifesaving Society has approved Swim for Life, and the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation will implement the program. We will continue to provide swimming lessons. The table below presents how each level will transition to the new program.
