Megan Ellis KC, a Canadian lawyer, was the first to dedicate a substantial amount of her practice to representing victims of child sexual abuse or assault. She has over 30 years of experience representing victims against their abusers and estate. She also represents institutions such as religious associations, governments, and religious organisations. Since 1991, she has been a pioneer in case law and helped to create legislative changes which increased the number of victims of sexual abuse and assault. She has successfully argued for an increase in the limitation period for filing actions against sexual abuse until the victim has understood the effects of the abuse. The victim is entitled to claim to have their wages decreased because of a history of sexual assault. It was possible to have the victim's identity excluded from the court file. Compensation for the sufferer is based on case law; thus, filing a lawsuit on the client is a unique practice. The reduction of the human rights act of sexual assault or abuse has enabled survivors to exercise their rights. It was necessary to adjust the law concerning the evidence, disclosure, and treatment of victims of sexual abuse or assault; thus, precedent was set for claimants to make more successful claims. She advocated for changes to the Canadian Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act to prevent abusers from using bankruptcy to avoid compensating the victims. Megan Ellis & Company were responsible for the establishment of the following committees: Participation in British Columbia Law Institute’s Project Committee on Civil Remedies for Sexual Assault Participation in the Institutional abuse Study Panel of the Law Commission of Canada Speaking at seminars for lawyers and other professionals to discuss sexual abuse claims and assault.
