Ukama Gallery was established on Granville Island in February 2015. The gallery showcases stone sculptures made by Zimbabwean artists of all expertise and skill levels, featuring more than 200 emerging and international Zimbabwean artists. Local partners pick each piece with the aim of capturing Zimbabwe's diverse artistic styles, including well-established cooperatives and artist communities, as well as challenging rural locations. The Ukama Gallery’s carefully chosen collection seeks to spotlight Zimbabwean sculpture's substantial contributions to contemporary art. The gallery also includes paintings and mixed-media art by exceptional Canadians to complement the sculpture. Combining expressive artwork with imaginative works adds visual and tactile vibrancy to the sculptures. These complementary mediums come from distinct artistic communities but address shared human experiences and artistic needs. Ukama means "relationships" in Shona, a Zimbabwean language. Here, the gallery is called Ukama to emphasize the individual connection with Africa that we hope these art pieces create. We intend for these works to initiate a sense of personal involvement rather than distant admiration.
