In 1963, UVic was granted degree-granting status. UVic's roots date back to 1903 when the precursor institution, Victoria College, was founded in 1903. The three martlets, footless heraldic bird-like creatures, on the UVic shield, reflect McGill University's crest. Victoria College has historical ties to McGill University. The university mottoes are on the UVic Coat of Arms: 'Let There Be Light' in Hebrew, and 'A Multitude of the Wise is the Health of the World' in Latin. The UVic Edge involves vibrant learning, vital impact, and an extraordinary academic environment. The three aspects create an ethos of innovation, discovery and imaginative creation. This Edge informs our efforts towards sustainability and well communities. The Edge is changing the world with a plethora of perspectives. Among them are those from Indigenous and International Communities. It underpins our commitment to social justice, economic well-being, and technological innovation. UVic has a cutting edge in dynamic learning and research with significant outcomes.
