Richmond Gymnastics Association was founded by Shirley Breakaway (women) and Judy Rithaler (females) in 1969/70. The program was established because the women noticed the draw to create inclusive recreational and competitive gymnastics for boys and girls in Richmond. Initially, the Thompson Community Center wanted to have a gymnastics program to keep children in the community active and fit. With one class per week, the club began at Thompson and then moved to Burnett school for Competitive Gymnastics. The program was so in demand that a permanent facility was needed. Dedicated individuals like Harvey, George Budget, and Laura Moore made the Sea Island Forum a reality. In the mid-'70s, the RGA program was created. RGA is a registered non-profit society under the BC Societies Act and staffed by essential volunteers. As a Gymnastics BC member and Gymnastics Canada affiliate, the RGA abides by these organizations' rules and laws.
