On May 10, 1968, 9 people died in an accident on Highway 59 south of Brokenhead. 33 children were left orphaned, and the only survivor was forced to use a wheelchair. Due to the persistent alcohol-related problems, meetings were held with various communities and organizations over two days in Winnipeg. The Native Alcoholism Council of Manitoba was established. It is now known as the Native Addictions Council of Manitoba. NACM was granted its first federal grant in 1972. It also hired 10 of its first employees and moved into its first garage office.
