Donwood Manor (“Donwood” from now on) in North Kildonan was built with a total of 81 beds in 1970. A more luminous environment was provided to 121 residents in 1996 with a refurbishment. Donwood Manor Elderly Persons Housing is a 150-unit building that was constructed in 1974 and is adjacent to the Donwood Manor Personal care Home. Donwood South, a 104-unit apartment building, was built on Henderson Highway in 1982 to comfortably house the elderly. Donwood West was built in 1988 to provide housing for 60 retired persons. This 60-unit complex was built as a life lease community, and Donwood West Inc. owns and manages it. Valhalla Cove was built in 1997. It is a 48-unit 55+ Life Lease Complex. Donwood Management Inc. sponsored this building as a 55+ life-lease complex. Donwood was founded as a Mennonite Brethren organization in Winnipeg. Donwood is currently supported by eight local Mennonite Brethren Churches. Donwood provides different levels of care for elderly persons at five retirement sites in Winnipeg. Its aim is stated in its Mission Statement, which is critically assessed and realized at every location, be it old-age personal care or independent living. Donwood supports seniors by facilitating their relocation to care communities and ensuring that they live with dignity and respect as they age.
