The Anna Leonowens Gallery exists since 1968 and is housed in the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University. The gallery, sometimes called The Anna, operates three locations: two in downtown Halifax on Granville Mall and one at Port Loggia in the Halifax waterfront. Over 4,650 exhibitions have been held in The Anna over the last 54 years. Its unique gallery space is central to all the operations at The Anna. It hosts professional exhibitions drawn from curators, professional artists, and NSCAD MFA thesis and BFA graduation solo exhibitions. In extension of NSCAD's pedagogical programs, The Anna enables emerging artists to have hands-on experience in exhibition practice each year. The Anna houses over 100 exhibitions and more than 70 other events, which attract over 22,000 visitors annually. The Anna Leonowens Gallery Systems The systems at The Anna Leonowens Gallery are crucial to its strategic objectives. They address three key priorities. (a) The system of curating exhibitions and related educational events: The Anna offers students from the University the opportunity to exhibit their creative work as part of their academic program. Those students are also given an opportunity to be "criticized" by their peers, faculty, and other members of the university. The Anna also has a broader mandate to provide the local community and the student body with the opportunity to see exhibitions of work from artists, planners, and designers, including faculty and alumni, as well work from individuals or groups outside of the universities' community.
