About this business

ViewPoint Gallery – founded in 2000 in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Its initial incarnation as a printmaker and photographer collaborative gallery transformed to a fine art photography gallery. At the time, this was a community effort to have a gallery to showcase the work of photographers and printmakers. The Gallery was started by a small group of photographers and printmakers. Now, it consists of fifteen members. It is a member-owned cooperative. Membership is by invitation. Only serious and committed artists live in Nova Scotia. They need to showcase their work, want to share in the cost of running the gallery, have the time and energy to do the work that comes with membership, and want to participate in the promotions and operation of the gallery. All artists contribute to running the gallery, and not having a space for the display of the work, not investing in the business, not participating in promotions, or not engaging members will lead to suspension and termination from the Gallery. ViewPoint Gallery is celebrating its 21st year. ViewPoint Gallery has had over 250 shows. The Gallery's goal is to introduce Nova Scotian photography to thousands of visitors. The Gallery embodies its commitment to photography and art in its new, light-filled space. In January 2008, the Gallery relocated to 1272 Barrington Street. The new gallery is in downtown Halifax. Also, the Access Gallery is located in the historic Cultural Federated Centre. Halifax's bustling downtown area is near the ferry terminal. This feature is unique to the Gallery because before, it was in an industrial part of the city. The Gallery expanded after this move. The new space allowed for a more extensive exhibition schedule. There was an addition of a Group Show space. The Gallery also started an extensive program including Guest Speakers and Open Print Reviews. This space also allowed for educational classes. This was made possible by a partnership with PhotoWorkshops.ca. ViewPoint Gallery is a place that is run by the artists. There is a dominant commitment to exhibiting and educating people about photography. This vision allows the Gallery to inspire and engage people in the artistic process. The Gallery includes individual photographs, Photo Books, and installations. There are also a catalogue and Web-based exhibitions. All members get to display their work. All past members are celebrated in a solo show. The solo shows also involve artist talks, presentations, and events. The Gallery is expanding its program with several artists in the Gallery. It also hosts guest shows. The Gallery continues to bring the best of Nova Scotian photography to thousands of visitors, promoting photography as an art. The Gallery is staffed by a professional staff. It is an artist-run cooperative. This simplifies the hardest work of making art that of promotion while artists retain ownership and control of their work.
