How this Guelph long-term disability calculator works

This calculator adds two numbers. Back pay is the monthly benefit your policy should have paid (after any CPP-D offset) multiplied by the months it has been unpaid. Future benefits are the same monthly amount until benefits normally end at age 65, converted to today's value with a discount rate. Insurers rarely pay the full future value in a lump sum, so the estimate also shows the range buyouts typically land in, which depends on whether you are still being paid, were cut off, or were denied from the start.

Ontario rules this calculator applies

Deadline to act
Generally 2 years from discovery (Limitations Act, 2002), often counted from when benefits stopped or were first payable (Clarke v. Sun Life, 2020 ONCA 11). An internal appeal may not pause the clock.
Discount rate
Future benefits are discounted at 1.2% for the first 15 years and 2.5% after (Ontario Rule 53.09, 2026).
Typical buyout range
Published lump-sum settlements land at about 50–75% of the present value of future benefits when the claim is being paid, 40–70% after benefits are cut off, and 30–60% when the claim was denied from the start. Back pay is added on top.
CPP-D offset
Most group policies reduce your LTD benefit by any CPP Disability you receive (about $1,236 a month on average in 2026).
Tax
If your employer paid any part of the premiums, monthly LTD benefits are taxable. In a lump-sum settlement of a denied claim, the back-pay portion is usually taxable and the future portion often is not, so how the settlement is split matters. Get tax advice before you sign.
Extra damages
Canadian courts can add damages for mental distress caused by a wrongful denial (Fidler v. Sun Life, 2006 SCC 30) and, rarely, punitive damages for bad faith (Whiten v. Pilot, 2002 SCC 18). These are seldom part of a settlement and are not in this estimate.

General information about Ontario disability insurance law, not legal or tax advice. The estimate is not a guarantee: your policy wording, medical evidence, offsets and the insurer's position all change the answer. A disability lawyer can tell you how these rules apply to you.

Frequently asked questions

8 questions
How does the long-term disability settlement calculator work?
The calculator estimates back pay, future benefits, and a typical lump-sum settlement range based on your claim status, policy type, monthly benefit, CPP-D offset, age, and months unpaid.
What is a long-term disability buyout?
A buyout is a lump-sum payment offered to settle your LTD claim. It usually ranges from 30-75% of the present value of future benefits, depending on claim status.
Why are LTD settlements below full value?
Insurers discount future benefits to present value and factor in risks like recovery or employment changes. Settlements typically reflect 30-75% of future benefits' value.
What is the deadline for LTD claims in Ontario?
Generally, you have 2 years from when benefits stopped or were first payable to sue, even if you appeal internally. This is based on Ontario's Limitations Act.
Is my LTD lump sum taxable in Ontario?
If your employer paid part of the premiums, monthly benefits are taxable. In a denied claim settlement, the back-pay portion is usually taxable, future benefits often aren't.
What is the 'own occupation' vs 'any occupation' test?
Most LTD policies switch from 'own occupation' to 'any occupation' after 24 months, affecting eligibility based on your ability to work in any job.
How accurate is the LTD settlement estimate?
The estimate uses typical ranges and current discount rates but can't guarantee specific outcomes due to individual policy terms and circumstances.
Can I get extra damages for a denied LTD claim in Ontario?
Courts may award damages for mental distress or bad faith, but these are rare and not included in settlement estimates.
