CAFKA – Contemporary Art Forum Kitchener and Area is a charitable, artist-run organization celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2021. CAFKA’s mandate is to advocate for contemporary art in all its forms, including interactive, interventionist, and public practices. CAFKA commissions artists to create temporary works that respond to local culture and urban features. On average, CAFKA's biennials feature 25 installations, performances, projects, and interventions; it also collaborates with music and cultural festivals, other art institutions in the region, and individuals. CAFKA works with the Region of Waterloo and the City of Kitchener to promote selected public art projects. CAFKA promotes education in the arts through public tours, workshops, videos, lectures, and other types of participation. The biennial of CAFKA is an opportunity to express the artistic community, including artists, arts professionals, students of art, and fans of contemporary art, within the public space of Kitchener Waterloo, and Cambridge. The biennial is also a means of bringing contemporary art outside of galleries, making it part of everyday life in these communities, and making it accessible to all residents of the region. This exhibition is a means of stimulating public debate on issues surrounding public and private spaces, by bringing in artists who are at the forefront of their field from all over the world.
