In Toronto, most Roman Catholics were interred in parish cemeteries throughout their first half century. The large piece of land at the back of St. Paul's Church was designated as its cemetery in 1822. Bishop Michael Power of St. Michael's Cathedral erected the cathedral in 1845. He also had plans for the cemetery, but the typhus outbreak and Irish Catholics' massive migration as they fled the potato famine changed everything. The parish cemeteries were filled due to the high death toll, which included Bishop Power in 1847. The second Bishop of Toronto, Bishop de Charbonnel, bought a portion of land at Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue to cater to the people's burial needs. St. Michael's Cemetery was dedicated on September 28th, 1855.
