For the first fifty years, most Toronto Roman Catholics were buried at parish cemeteries, including St. Paul's Church on Power Street. The large piece of land behind St. Paul's church became its cemetery in 1822. Bishop Michael Power built St. Michael's Cathedral in 1845, with plans for an adjoining cemetery. The typhus epidemic and heavy migration from the potato famine changed this plan. Due to the high number of deaths, including Bishop Power in 1847, parish cemeteries filled up. The second bishop of Toronto, Bishop de Charbonnel, decided to acquire property at the northeast corner of Yonge Street and St. Clair Avenue to address the demand. St. Michael's Cemetery opened on September 28, 1855.
