I’m writing this to warn other dog owners of what happened to my dog Echo while he was being groomed at Crowned Canines in January 2023. My dog had been to this groomer one time prior in 2022 with no issues, however, the second time he almost died due to what occurred at this groomer.
On January 7th, 2023. I dropped off my dog Echo to get bathed, have his anal glands expressed, and have a paw pad treatment. I booked him to have this done by Naomi. When I picked up my dog some hours later he had high anxiety, he was jumping on me and acting strange. Additionally, the employee brought him out to me wearing the wrong collar and leash.
When we got home my dog ran to his crate, did not want anyone to touch him, and cowered away from his own family. The next day, my dog was still in his crate, he refused to eat, he refused to move, and he refused to go near anyone. We knew something was terribly wrong and on January 9th, 2023, we went to the vet.
When we got to the vet they did an examination, ran blood work, and did an X-ray. Upon examination, my dog’s anal glands were 3x to 4x the normal size and extremely infected. Additionally, he had a fever, his bladder was engorged, and he developed acute pancreatitis and gastritis. The vet explained that this could have occurred due to improper expression of his anal glands (that the groomer “allegedly” did) or from unsanitary equipment as they also discovered an opened lesion on his paw (“allegedly” looked like a nick from something).
My dog was hospitalized for approximately 8 hours, was on an IV drip that provided him anti-inflammatories, fluids, and antibiotics. At 8:00 pm that night we picked up our dog and hoped that the medication provided by the vet could help Echo combat the infection and inflammation in his body.
Thankfully my dog made it through the night, but two days later he was back at the vet. On January 11th, 2023, we discovered an open lesion on his neck that was below his left ear. It looked like a punctured hole and it was bleeding. Then we noticed on our furniture there were blood spots. Come to find out at the vet, my dog was covered in open lesions all over his body, under his coat there were open wounds that were actively bleeding. They had to shave his neck to inspect the skin, I have attached pictures to show the gravity of the wounds.
After all of the above occurred, I decided to reach out to the owner, Naomi. I spoke to her on the phone and explained what happened. I explained the sickness my dog experienced and the findings from the vet, to which she said that she didn’t bathe Echo (my dog) or express his anal glands. Even though we booked Naomi, as the groomer, someone else did the bathing and she just did the paw pad treatment, since the anal glands were never “allegedly” done.
There was no sorry, apology, or accountability, just feigned ignorance on her part. On the phone, she admitted that they didn’t even express my dog's anal glands, yet they charged me for it. She admitted that she didn’t bathe my dog as she was running late that day, so someone else did it.
Her main excuse is that Saturdays are really busy and she had a very chaotic day. She then mentioned that someone's dog even went out with the wrong collar and leash, I then had to let her know that said person was me whom they gave the wrong collar and leash. I then asked for a refund for the services that day and she said verbatim on the phone she would refund the add-on services of the anal gland expression (that they “allegedly” didn’t do) and paw pad treatment. I said that wouldn’t suffice as I would like a refund of all services, which she agreed to.
We got an e-transfer for $58.79 which is a total joke as we spent close to $200.00 for the service. And after spending over $2000 on vet fees/visits, we were astonished. We decided to not accept the e-transfer and stop all further communication.
Please keep in mind the experience we had at this place and interaction with the owner. Keep your pets safe.
