The British landscape architects Howard Dunington-Grubb and Lorrie Dunington - Grubb came to Toronto in 1911. They wanted to introduce the English garden concept to Canada. No private gardens existed in Canada at the time, and no nursery could provide the necessary plants. Howard and Lorrie bought 100 acres near Sheridan in Ontario, now part of Oakville. They began Sheridan Nurseries to grow ornamental plants. Howard and Lorrie were committed to their work as landscape architects. They needed someone competent to run Sheridan Nurseries since they were mainly designing. Lorrie put an ad in London's Gardeners Chronicle for a gardener in November 1913. Herman Stensson, a skilled Scandinavian horticulturalist, replied to the ad. His family came to Canada in the spring of 1914, and he started the nursery.
