How this Mississauga solar cost calculator works

This calculator sizes a solar system from your electricity use. Your monthly bill, divided by the average Ontario electricity price, gives your yearly use; Ontario's sunshine (1,170 kWh per kW of panels a year) then gives the system size that covers it, adjusted for roof direction and shade. The installed price is that size multiplied by the price per watt homeowners in Ontario pay installers. Payback compares that price with what the panels save at Ontario power prices, assuming prices rise 3% a year.

Ontario numbers this calculator uses

Installed price
$2.42–$3.05 per watt in Ontario (CAD) (typical $2.74), before rebates. A typical 6 kW home system costs $14,500–$18,300.
Sunshine
1,170 kWh of electricity per kW of panels a year in Ontario.
Electricity price
About 15¢ per kWh, the average residential price in Ontario.
Selling power back
Ontario net metering credits exported power for the energy portion of your bill only, not delivery, and credits expire after 12 months.
Rebates and tax credits
The Home Renovation Savings Program pays $1,000 per kW, up to $5,000 or half the cost, for systems that power your home without net metering. Battery rebates are also available. There is no federal solar grant or loan open to homeowners in 2026: the Canada Greener Homes Grant closed to new applicants in 2024 and the Greener Homes Loan closed on October 1, 2025.

An estimate, not a quote. Roof size and pitch, shading, equipment, permits and the installer all change the final price; installers confirm it after a site visit. Frequently asked questions

6 questions
Are solar panels worth it in Ontario?
With electricity at about 15 cents per kWh, solar panels can reduce bills significantly. Payback depends on system size, usage, and incentives.
How many solar panels does a typical home need?
A typical 6 kW system requires about 18-24 panels, depending on panel wattage and roof direction.
Can I sell power back to the grid in Ontario?
Ontario's net metering credits exported power for the energy portion of your bill only, with credits expiring after 12 months.
How does roof direction affect solar panel efficiency?
South-facing roofs need fewer panels. East or west roofs need about 15% more. North-facing roofs are usually not recommended.
How accurate is the solar panel cost estimate?
The calculator estimates based on local costs, roof direction, shade, and energy use, but actual costs may vary.
How does having an electric car affect my solar needs?
Each electric car adds about 2,700 kWh a year to your electricity use, which increases the solar system size needed.
