OATC Ottawa West Clinic

OATC Ottawa West Clinic was established in 1995 as the Ontario Addiction Treatment Centres. At the time, treatment for opioid agonist therapy using methadone was not well-served, and many people had to travel a hundred kilometers or more for treatment. Today, OATC provides treatment to more than ten thousand people each day in over fifty communities across Ontario. The OATC staff provides optimal care to our patients, and solicits for long-term sobriety from their main drug of abuse (no longer called the primary drug of choice). Abstaining from drug use may appear to be the best approach for people to take, but at OATC, our emphasis is on harm reduction. The idea is not new. Drug addiction can lead to many negative outcomes, including overdose, victimization, financial and relationship problems, death, and imprisonment. The harm reduction model encourages people to try and access treatment that is not judgmental, but instead helps them work out the kinks in their lives. At OATC, we have treated opioid addiction (painkillers like codeine, heroin, and oxycodone) and other addictive substances (nicotine.co.uk, cannabis.) as well as providing treatment for unfortunate consequences of drugs, such as HIV/AIDS care. Our achievements over the last twenty-two years are commendable. A lot of people in our Centre could have died if they had not been able to access the services of our Centre. Our success is due to the many organizations and those in the social work who have helped us. We also remember those who came in, and together we have been able to climb that mountain and successfully stopped the autopilot addiction; that mountain that sometimes does not even have a road.
