Fair Trade Jewellery Co. was established in 2006 by Ryan Taylor and Robin Gambhir alongside fellow leader Robin Gambhir. This company started as a wholesale operation dedicated to providing retail jewelers with unique designs using Oro Verde gold sourced from Colombia responsibly. Actually, Oro Verde, the Fairtrade Oro Verde program, was the first source anywhere for Fairtrade gold. Robin and Ryan were well ahead of their time in recognizing the potential for a completely different kind of supply chain. It relieved the stress on their consciences, though their existing industry interest was meager. We decided to cater directly to the consumer after their own initiatives gained little traction. Ethical sourcing of goods in the jewelry business was a concern from the beginning. FTJCo was created with the purpose of being an agent of change that sources and brings to market gold and gems that are both traceable and renewable. A team of Fairtrade-certified auditors actually went to the Oro Verde Mine in Colombia for the first time in 2008. The mine officially became the first gold mine to receive a Fairtrade license. We need to tell their story. We made a documentary called The Last Goldrush to clarify the history and processes of our gold. We wanted to provide information on Oro’s mines and how gold is responsibly mined.
