Belgard barbershop members claim that the Ancient Egyptians revered barbers as the most revered men in their tribe. The barbers also performed religious ceremonies. A beard was thought of positively in the third century, and it signified manliness. By the fourth century, Alexander the Great saw shaving as a vital need. He wanted his soldiers not to be caught in combat hand-to-hand. The Roman barbers included shaving as a significant part of their social events. The growing popularity of shaving prompted the division of barbers into three associations in the twelfth century. These were the Barber, the Barber-Wigmaker, and the Barber-Surgeon. The Barber association could open a barbershop. The Barber-wigmaker was responsible for hair care in large princely homes. All barbers were trained in hairstyling.
