ABOUT   Services Excellence Summary

The U of S Art Galleries present a range of historical and contemporary art, and artistic practices, which engage the most urgent and difficult problems of today, social, political, aesthetic, intellectual, environmental, cultural, or otherwise. Relationality is crucial to our local and global outlook. We must stimulate the university's creative environment in a spirit of interdisciplinary provocation and enquiry. Our galleries must also be permeable, allowing for reciprocal interaction with the community, both locally and nationally. The Kenderdine Gallery, College Galleries 1 & 2, Gordon Snelgrove, and College Galleries 1 & 2 are part of an independent cultural research institution within the University. We support freedom of expression and intellectual exploration and foster open dialogue and debate. Our guiding principles are the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's principles and calls to action; we are committed to their implementation. We are also dedicated to the co-creation of the future the Commission seeks. The public gallery must be accessible to all. This is essential to our inquiry. We recognize that the past is essential to understanding the present and future and we assert our responsibility to interpret and examine our collective memory. In a recent three-year project called "Galleries Reimagined", the U of S Art Galleries underwent a comprehensive reevaluation of its formation, values, capacities, and intentions. The project clarified that artistic production and distribution within the university context is a privileged member of social ecology, especially in an increasingly virtual world. It highlighted the role of creative practices in the indigenization of knowledge, the diversity of the workforce, and unlearning. The U of S Art Galleries will make a mission-driven effort to connect with our colleagues and clients, producing, disseminating, and collecting art in response to the urgent, emerging, and vital issues of the day. We will assess our offerings by their relevance, seeking reciprocity and aiming for resonance.
