At the dawn of the century, Archbishop Mathieu had a dream. He dreamed of a Catholic educational institution that could serve his French-Canadian faithful. Consequently, he envisioned a French-language college where men of all ages could receive their education. His dream came true on 14 December 1918, when the Catholic College of Gravelbourg (nicknamed “College Mathieu”) welcomed French-speaking men. The original college building was anything but inadequate in its first year. As a result of the large enrollment, a second building was constructed. This building stands on the foundations of the parish church that was intended to be erected in 1919. The College’s successful first year far exceeded all expectations. Teachers were also in short supply. In August 1920, Bishop Mathieu handed the College over to the Oblate Fathers of Mary Immaculate. They took control of it and started building. This second building will double the College’s capacity.
