Type A Immersion, a second language learning approach, 80% of the classroom instruction occurs in a second language, with English proficiency a priority. It is a controlled approach. Secondly, it is based on the assumption that children will learn a second language most effectively when they have the most meaningful experiences in the classroom. Learning a second language has several benefits. Saskatoon French School was established in 1966 as a private school and was made an associated non-denominational school of the Greater Saskatoon Catholic School Board (GSCB) in 1982. Type A French Immersion school is open to all families from any linguistic background. Saskatoon French School was established in September 1966 in the basement of the Yamaha Piano Centre, Broadway Avenue. It was the second French immersion school in Canada. The concept was to give more students the opportunity to study Canada's official languages in an academic context. At the time, the French language education program was an experiment, so the parent board of the newly formed French school asked French teachers to provide the most current methods and a good model for teaching French in the classroom.
