St. Thomas More College (STM) – a Catholic college in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan affiliated with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) – enables USask students to choose from an additional 240+ Science and Arts courses. The College, inaugurated in 1913, was long overdue by Saskatoon Catholics, who urged its founding to support the University of Saskatchewan but faced refusals due to enrolment not meeting the government’s prerequisites. Out of this, the STM was established in April 1926 after a group of Catholic priests from Saskatoon, the Newman Society, actively pushed for its formation. The college officially opened in September 1926 with the appointment of Fr. Dr. Basil Markle (Archdiocese of Toronto) to teach Scholastic Philosophy and serve as the chaplain to Catholic students. Newman Hall, also known as "the white house," was built in 1927 to provide accommodation for students. In 1928, the student Newman Club was established to promote extracurricular activities.
