The middle child of a family of eleven from a small farm in south Birmingham, Sterling had to leave high school when his parents fell ill before graduating. He told everyone he was going to be a car salesman. His first job in the car business was at Brownell Ford, 1912 until 1916, just two blocks from his house. Sterling saved every dollar he could to realize his dream of owning a dealership one day. Edwards Motor Company began when Sterling signed a contract with Louis Chevrolet, the Chevrolet Motor Company, and himself on August 5, 1916, with his savings. The business used this name until the mid-1950s. Edwards Chevrolet Downtown is the oldest and longest in downtown Birmingham. At more than 100 years old, this store has seen many changes and challenges. From Alabama's very first Chevrolet dealership downtown Birmingham in Sterling Edwards's time in 1915 to celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2016, it has been the only one to have the same name and the same fine family during that entire period.
