He worked as a welder and journeyman hydraulics technician in the mines for two years after graduation from high school. Martin worked in the mines and did welding and construction in the summer months throughout the Southwest. Martin earned his Registered Nurse license in the 1970s. Between 1978 and 1983, he studied forensic anatomy/pathology in dwellings, alleys, and under a bridge and received a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing.
