My grandmother was the one who fueled me to pursue a career in massage therapy. No one else could sit with her at dialysis, and I became her companion. The greatest chats came during her foot massage as she recovered. It was always surprising when she said, "There is something on your hands. They return you when you rub! ‘Do something with your hand’’ (in Gujrati, obviously). This memory makes me burst out in laughter and wonder. The day I told Ma I wanted this, she said it wasn’t something an Indian girl would do. That reaction is etched in my mind and face. Ten years into my career as a hotel general manager working for a corporation, I still wanted to turn my long-held dream of massage therapy into reality. I attended the massage therapy program while a full-time general manager. It took a year to transition from a general manager to a licensed massage practitioner. Another year-and-a-half later, we opened Shanti Healing in Southern California on May 8, 2015. My business was only two and a half years old when my husband, and I tied the knot. Being a practitioner and a wife necessitated a move to the Bay Area. I have a fondness for good food, exquisite wine, and sports. But the joy of joining a client’s healing journey cannot be compared. It’s not only therapeutic but also an opportunity to teach, guide, and share information about wellness, health, and self-care. Every person is trying to stay positive and healthy. This struggle affects their bodies, homes, workplaces, families, and everyone they encounter.
