You can see why big companies such as Google, Apple, and Ikea invest in solar energy. Just like buying a house, deciding to go solar can be similar. It is possible to invest in yourself, take control over your energy costs and pay your utility provider monthly for rented electricity. Research shows that solar-powered homes are more desirable to buyers than those without. Going solar can increase your property's worth. It also means you will be Energy independent. A typical home that has solar panels could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to one-third per year, while an acre could produce an astonishing 10000 tonnes of savings.

This calculator sizes a solar system from your electricity use. Your monthly bill, divided by the average California electricity price, gives your yearly use; California's sunshine (1,677 kWh per kW of panels a year) then gives the system size that covers it, adjusted for roof direction and shade. The installed price is that size multiplied by the price per watt homeowners in California pay installers. Payback compares that price with what the panels save at California power prices, assuming prices rise 3% a year.
An estimate, not a quote. Roof size and pitch, shading, equipment, permits and the installer all change the final price; installers confirm it after a site visit.
