Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary

In the late 1800s, the Ragsdale family began serving families in Oklahoma with a passion for funeral services. William Ragsdale, a relative of the Ragsdale family, established the Ragsdale Undertaking Company in 1889 when he relocated from Arkansas to Indian Territory. In Muskogee, William operated a livery barn and rented horse-drawn hearses to grieving families. After he attended an embalming school, the Ragsdale Undertaking Company was founded. Established in two states, Hartwell Ragsdale II and his brother, Lincoln Ragsdale, from Ardmore, with their support, Hartwell Ragsdale, Jr. started a Phoenix mortuary. After the San Diego mortuary owner, A. M. Anderson and his son, Don, went out to sea and died, another opportunity came. Hartwell, while fishing, learned that the Anderson Mortuary at Imperial Avenue had been sold off after the owner's death. He and Hazel, his wife, relocated to San Diego from Arizona in the same year, 1975, to start Anderson-Ragsdale Mortuary. Hartwell and Hazel had seven children, all of whom currently work in the organization. The business has grown as the family attended to their churches and social groups, which benefited from their generous giving. They renovated their new Federal Boulevard facility in 1977. Hartwell W. Skipper Ragsdale, 4th Generation Funeral Director and Embalmer, leads the business today. Our family has been starting this tradition for over 126 years.
