In 1970, a young man named Dick Hayne from West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, had a vision. What was his vision? Free People. He even opened a tiny store in a former World War II navy yard. The young men who lived and shopped there were called Free People. They wanted a little freedom through clothes. Urban Outfitters was the name given to the shop as it grew from one to two. Meg, Dick's wife, was appointed Urban Outfitters' private label manager. They wanted to offer exclusive products. Tremendous interest was generated by the products they offered, so they knew they had to satisfy the demand. A wholesale product line was created by Meg and Dick to do just this. The wholesale line was a mix of various names: Bulldog Ecote Cooperative Anthropologie and Ecote. In 1984, the name Free People was given to the company. That’s it. We discovered in 2001 that Free People was responsible for many of our favorite images of courage and femininity. We needed to return to the roots. Free People has evolved from a young image to a modern, mature brand. The clothing was well-priced and high quality, so that 20-something females could afford it. We wish this girl was talented, creative and confident in every aspect of her life. She is free and adventurous and sweet and tough, tomboy and romantic. She is a girl who enjoys being busy, pushing her limits and likes hanging out with friends and traveling. She loves Donovan just as much as The Dears and will happily pet any dog she sees. We draw, create, sew, and shop for her today. Our Free People Collection offers her many options so that she can bring her closest friends shopping. If she loves her colors and patterns mixed together, then she should definitely check our knits, sweaters and skirts. Our designs anticipate to replenish her intimates, accessories and jewelry closet. Free People has four wholesale showrooms in New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. The Free People sales and wholesale teams are dedicated to large customers. We are always on the lookout for more customers who share our vision and would let us become part of their lives. Our line has been sold in more than 1,400 stores around the globe. Nordstrom and Bloomingdales have opened concept stores in their department stores to showcase the clothes and offer the other customers the ultimate Free People experience. They reflect our style. Customers can relax and enjoy the ambiance in a comfortable, lively lounging space. All the fixtures at Free People are handcrafted, down to the handmade hangers available. The Paramus, New Jersey, boutique was opened in the autumn of 2002. Today, there are boutiques all over the US and Canada. They will continue to be more and more in the future. In October 2004, Free People launched a virtual trip through FreePeople.com. Free People also launched Free People UK website in 2012, followed by Free People China’s site in 2014. They were very well received by shoppers all over the globe who desire a little extra in their online shopping experience.
