Our first real estate agent lied to us. We hadn't been seniors in college for two years. We had no idea what we were doing when it came to investing or real estate. We didn't let that deter us. Friends and family warned us to be careful and thought we were crazy. Still, we pursued our real estate dreams and made them a reality. The perfect starter home for two young wood-builders like ourselves, we purchased a three-bedroom, one-bathroom home in Buffalo's snowy suburb in 2011. Since that purchase of real estate, our lives have changed dramatically. We learned firsthand how beneficial homeownership could be for ourselves as real estate professionals. We didn't know it then, but this transaction sparked a passion for us to build our real estate portfolio and assist other investors. We both landed "dream jobs" that paid well and pleased our parents in the months after buying that house. All 4 years of college "paid off" we thought. It was hard. Every. Single. It was only a minute. We had to move on before it was. 18 months later, we realized that the city was not our home, shoveling snow is a workout, our jobs sucked, and we both had bigger aspirations. Enough was enough. We sat at our table, watching snow fall outside, and sketched out a seven-week roadmap for a road trip that would take us through nineteen states to get to our ultimate goal, San Diego. We sold everything that had two vehicles, our New York property, our car, and put our house on the market. Melissa took a job as a tech company manager because she wanted to leave her NY corporation job. John accepted a position with Realty National in real estate. Within a year, he was promoted to the CT Homes investment team, where he learned everything he knew about real estate investing.
