An Opportunity In 1948, Helene and Joe Sherwood- my grand grandparents - had an idea. They wanted to have something to provide for their family and started their business. In 1965, after 17 years of working for someone else in the jewelry industry, my grandpa wanted more. He mortgaged his home. He borrowed- but that wasn’t enough- he needed more to realize his dream. One day, he spotted an opportunity that would change his life when he least expected. He saw an ad in the local paper about a small jewelry store on Eastern Avenue, Bell Gardens. He decided to spend his last penny to acquire it. Grandma had stayed home to raise two sons, my father, and uncle. She was well aware that managing a house and store at the same time was not an easy task. But she enjoyed it, for she had already fallen in love with the business. Her love for the shop was unmatched. She ran the shop as she controlled everything at home, so they had a good life. The business was unique- my grandpa would treat his clients like friends and family, a culture that he had passed to my generation. He never exploited anybody; he allowed his clients to take the giftware or jewelry and pay for it later. To make it easy for the customers, he had his in-house credit. It was an easy process. Nobody was above the other, as all took the items they could afford.
