Rev. Mark L. Griffin, the current Chairman of the Board of Wayman Academy of the Arts, founded the school in 1999. WAA was among Duval County's inaugural charter schools in 2000. The establishment began small with only 150 students in grades K-5. Two generations of kids have prospered at Wayman Academy. On our twentieth year, we appreciate the journey and are still committed to academic excellence. Fine Arts create an environment that is inventive, challenging, and nurturing. Our parents and students will eventually become our most valuable partners in nurturing and educating their children.

There are various reviews highlighting the qualities of the school and all rate it positively. The reviews praise the school and compliment the staff's professionalism and care. The campus is also applauded consistently and attracted an 'A' rating. The feedback suggests that the staff are partly responsible for the student's discipline and the school's success. A grandmother offered proof that leaving the school would be a bad idea. Her granddaughter excelled at the school in the first year and did poorly in the third year. This school seems to be experiencing growing pains as far as expanding the grades from kindergarten to grade 5 because the pupils, as evidenced by the review, love the teachers, and it impacts their results. They are also calling for the establishment of further grades, such as grade 6.
