His grandmother had been one of his best friends growing up, so he told her the story. She asked him how much it would cost to create his shop. He estimated that it would be $300. She gave him $300 from her cookies jar, which was a place where she had been saving money. She then told him to "do it yourself." She gave the money to Dick, who then used it to set up a bait and tackle shop in Binghamton. Dick's Sporting Goods began to grow in the 1970s with the expansion of its product range.
