It was a journey from humble beginnings in 1925 that saw it grow to become a FORTUNE(r), 500 company today with more than 6,000 employees, and six million policies. H.O. Hirt, and O.G. Crawford had a plan. They wrote it on a 10-cent tablet. Today, that's the equivalent to a business prospectus. But they still needed funds. To raise $31,000, it took them 3 months and 20-days. They won over 90 stockholders through their business plan and the tenacity of their team. The Erie Insurance Exchange was founded on April 20, 1925. One of its first policies was written using H.O.'s Dodge touring car. With the ERIE being Above all in SEvIcE, the company's motto became "The ERIE Is Above All in SERvIcE", with "erie" making reference to the word service. This is still the tagline of the company today. Customers were encouraged to make a call from home. If a policyholder was having trouble with a claim, they could call H.O. directly. Hirt. ERIE had already grown after only three years. In 1928, ERIE opened a second branch in Pittsburgh. In 1953, the company opened its first branch outside Pennsylvania.
