Here’s How to Know if You Should Choose Coffey Bros
Choose Coffey Bros if you want to pay 30% more than their estimate and have the distinct honor of wondering where your belongings—and your sanity—have gone.
I consider my experience with Coffey Bros less a mover/customer relationship and more a twisted social experiment in patience, endurance, stress management, deceitful pricing practices, and Kafkaesque bureaucracy. If you want to give your moving company a complete and accurate inventory, pack everything yourself, and have the company still somehow manage to inflate the bill by more than 30% of what they quoted, then I come with good news— there’s a mover for you.
Choose Coffey Bros if you’re into horror-movie level Claims Departments.
In my experience, their Claims department is more of a myth than an actual department. They never answered phones, never responded to emails with any semblance of timeliness, and definitely never would agree to escalate a claim, no matter the severity. They seem to specialize in ignoring well-documented damage, even when you buy their insurance and diligently document the scope of their mistakes. So if denial seems like a customer service strategy that you’d prefer to find yourself on the receiving end of, then guess what— we just found your mover.
Choose Coffey Bros if you enjoy ransom demands on your belongings.
They held my items hostage and refused to unload from their truck until I paid for the entire move up front. This total amount included artificially-inflated and unsubstantiated charges for unloading time that they significantly overestimated—and then never reimbursed.
Choose Coffey Bros if you’re interested in working with a moving company that sets the bar at merely showing up.
Coffey Bros guarantees they show up— in my case, it was six hours after the arrival window, leaving me and my 8-month pregnant wife in a house with no furniture, waiting for hours without any proactive updates. The office had no idea where their own trucks were driving.
Choose Coffey Bros if you like your complaints carbon-copied to 20+ other furious customers so you can bond over shared trauma.
Overwhelmed by her workload, the claims manager CC’d me on a message to over 20 other customers filing claims. Reading those emails was like discovering a support group you never wanted to join. But I did learn that my horror story is just one chapter in a very long and devastating epic of incompetence, deception, and damage (both emotional and literal).
So if you’re the type that may be interested in lighting your money on fire and pushing your possessions down a hill, you might be interested in choosing Coffey Bros. At least then you’ll know where the damage came from.
PS – I did file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, where Coffey Bros enjoys a one-star rating. For the damage to my floors, my walls, and my personal property, and for all that my family endured in our at-every-moment agonizing dealings with this company, they offered $300 for relief and my eternal vow of silence. This review may serve as evidence that I am (just a little) more expensive.
First they loaded the container very loosely, so I ended up being charged for a full container when in reality I needed less than half a container. Second, because items were loose, many of the items were broken including the TV.
This company is a scam and their reviews are biased. The company damaged thousands of dollars worth of my furniture and all my tvs. My husband was in the basement of our storage unit all by himself unloading while the workers were up to throwing out furniture into the truck unpadded. The movers didn’t finish the move left my husband without his knowledge and came back up from the basement with no workers to be found. The company stated they would not release our items until we paid 3 x the quotes amount. They falsely advertised their address on google as being located in Chicago and elsewhere. Coffey bros moving company is located at 9901 Derby ln Winchester, IL. We had to drive to Winchester to pick up our damaged furniture and pay the company 3,500 cash for no move. Don’t fall victim or be scammed by this company
If I could rate my experience with Coffey Movers, more specifically, Ken Coffey ZERO stars I would. I actually have little complaints about the movers themselves as they carried themselves professionally and were understanding of the frustrating situation.
I booked movers for 12pm. At first my estimate stated that they would be there between 11am-12pm. The day before, it was updated to 12pm-2pm. The day of the move rolls around and I contacted the company as well as dispatch multiple times and received little to no accurate information until 2pm when I was told my movers wouldn’t arrive until 4pm. I had instructed that prior to booking that I could only access the elevator in my building from 12-3pm. I missed my move out slot due to them showing late from another move and had to pay additional fees to move out after hours. On top of that, the movers brought an extra large truck for a studio move that wouldn’t fit in the loading dock which delayed loading even further, thus adding more fees to my time slot with the crew. By the time we started loading the truck from the origin destination, it was 6 pm.
I understand delays happen, and my poor experience comes less from the movers than from Ken Coffey when trying to troubleshoot this frustrating issue. I have never encountered a more unprofessional and misogynistic individual- and from a company owner no less. When I explained to Ken that I would have to pay my building a $100/hr after hours move out fee and expressed my frustrations having to wait 6 HOURS after my scheduled move, he threatened to cancel my move all together “for being sour” and actually said “I’d rather jump off a bridge than talk to you”. I am amazed how he functions day to day let alone runs a company. He is clearly okay with running his moving staff ragged for 12 hours doing back to back to back moves, instead of sending another crew when they knew the original one wasn’t going to make it on time. I’d hire the movers again through freelance but will never go through this company again and don’t suggest anyone should either.
My recent experience with this moving company was extremely disappointing. Not only did they crack my $180 computer case I've loved since I got it in May of 2014 during the move, but they were also unable to disassemble my bed due to their lack of standard tools. This resulted in them stripping one of the hex screws on my bed, which will require a lot of effort to remove.
To add to the frustration, they lost one of the bed legs during the move, leaving me unable to find a replacement and forcing me to replace the entire bed at an unexpected cost.
I’ve never left a negative review of a company and frankly it makes me uncomfortable to do so. I’ve spent days searching every inch the my apartment in the hopes I’d find it and not have to post this review.
But the disappointment didn't stop there. Just two days later, my brother used the same company and also had a negative experience. As someone who was there with him, I can confirm that the movers appeared to be under the influence of marijuana, which made the entire experience uncomfortable and unprofessional. They also smelled strongly of marijuana, which only added to our discomfort.
Given the problems we experienced in both moves over the span of just three days, I highly recommend avoiding this moving company if you can. However, if you do decide to use them, make sure to purchase the maximum amount of insurance possible to protect yourself from any damages that may occur during the move
Held my terrified elderly sister and her husband's stuff hostage on Saturday at 8:30 pm, trying to extort TWICE what was quoted. Telling them, they would haul away their things unless they came up with $1800 more on top of the $2000 you quoted. Shame on you and your company. I see on your google and Facebook pages we aren't the only ones you've done this to as well. Hidden in between all your fake reviews are other horror stories as well.
Either do more realistic bids or stick to your bids. To bait them in telling them "Oh don't worry, we do these all the time, we can get it done in 5 hours" and then try to charge double that should be criminal.
2 hours late, 2 hour break, and trying to bill them for the time too. Shame on you.
If you read this and still use this company, don't say you haven't been warned.
