SONITROL Security Systems was established over 55 years ago, when a policeman and an electrical engineer were searching for a method to decrease false alarms and increase criminal apprehension rates. The first microphone was installed in an office building in Anderson, Indiana, by electrical engineer Robert Baxter. He used the microphones to detect termites in the walls by listening to their chewing. Baxter had already patented an ultrasonic detection device and worked on other audio-related projects. Local policeman Al Cronk heard about Baxter and his work. In 1963, the police department in Anderson was directed to a break-in by a silent alarm. The officers discovered false activations and malfunctioned detectors before the intruder was located. Al decided to set up a meeting with Baxter. Cronk and Baxter brainstormed security ideas in the coming weeks, and they were both frustrated with the number of occasions that the current alarms failed to catch criminals. They would often hear about break-ins on the radio and wish that they could have caught the intruder. Baxter suggested a device that could catch a sound of any unique frequency. SONITROL Security Systems was formed in 1964. SONITROL provides security services throughout North America, including 24/7 Central Station monitoring for its growing network of national and international customers.
