From a young German's ambition to create a better America, Water Tower Clock & Watch was formed. Conrad Utecht decided his American Dream was an old-world profession when he left his home country. He scurried on foot, peddling his clock repairs door-to-door. Clock enthusiasts admired Mr. Utecht's charm and experience, and he soon drew enough of an audience to build a profitable repair shop in his house. The enterprising young man had gained many clients when Water Tower Clock & Watch opened on Wells Street in Chicago a few years later. Mr. Utecht married Caroline and became a father. Caroline subsequently became engaged to Ludwig Matthiesen, a young German baker who shared the same ideals as Mr. Utecht. Fortunately, the two men got along so well that Mr. Utecht began teaching Ludwig about clock repair. The two combined their commercial efforts a few years after Ludwig had been an apprentice and then became his partner.
