ArtMix

Founded in 1982, ArtMix is an Indianapolis nonprofit. It provides art services to people with disabilities. ArtMix reaches more than 71,000 adults and children annually through its six programs and partnerships with organizations. ArtMix's mission is based on a fundamental need in the community that remains unmet. People with disabilities frequently lack access to the arts. In central Indiana, almost one in five people has a disability (U.S. Census 2010). A disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially affects one or more major activities, such as self-care and learning. Barriers, such as steps or curbs, are part of life with a disability. Misconceptions about disability can be more harmful. For some people, there may be more adversity to being disabled. These people may feel discouraged from participation in various activities, and they may be marginalized. ArtMix addresses this gap. Most arts organizations and disability service providers offer isolated, limited arts programs for individuals with disabilities. ArtMix breaks down real and mental barriers to participation by providing adaptive and inclusive ongoing arts programs. This approach encourages all participants to be creators and consumers.
